The story from Richard’s webpage about the monk who physically self-immolated had a significant impact on me, when I first read it. On that same page, Richard mentions that he has been actually free since 1992. However, in this letter written in 1995 to the veteran board, he states that he is uncertain whether the story about the monk is real. It feels unusual that this wasn’t addressed on his webpage.
He also writes “I suffer from Depersonalisation and Derealisation”, “I experience everything as being unreal” and “I find anxiety to be too mild a word as I experience life in a state of abject fear”. I also think it’s relevant to note that he was medicated at least until 1996 with drugs known to significantly alter a person’s subjective reality. Perhaps he addressed these topics elsewhere, and I’m simply unaware of it. I haven’t read all that is written on the website. Maybe these statements don’t contradict what is written on his webpage. Also, I understand an actually free person can and will feel physical pain. Also, not that my opinion on this matters, but he had every right to request that veteran pension. The bureaucracy veterans face for compensation is absurd and sometimes one must navigate that system strategically. Nevertheless, this letter left me feeling confused, especially considering that he chose to publish it right before his death.
There are other writings from Richard that I find puzzling, such as this one:
the magical prodigy which became known as ‘the quickening’ is a feature peculiar to being the genitor of the completely new consciousness (a totally original way of being conscious) for all humankind [source]
I genuinely don’t know what to make of this or if I fully understand it. When he refers to himself as the “genitor of the completely new consciousness,” it sounds like he’s claiming to have invented it rather than discovered it.
I choose to disregard this in the same way I choose to disregard what is described as the “weird” of actualism. At the moment I focus on what works for me experientially, which is essentially the actualism method.
Disclaimer: I used an AI to revise and slightly rewrite this text.
Have you read all of Vineeto’s “PS” at the end, reading all the tool-tips and following all the links and reading through those fully (such as Richard's Reports Regarding 30+ Months Severe Mental Agitation)? This will provide broader context that may allow you to have it make more sense.
This sensible approach will serve you well . Many a person gets waylaid and off the path by deviating from the experiential into the theoretical, then constructing many a belief system, worldview, narrative, or argument structure against a conceptual (and thus faux) ‘actualism’ – none of which has any relevance to that which is experiential, which clearly shows the innate benefit and intrinsic superiority to allowing the purity, benignity and benevolence of the actual world increasingly live your life, rather than ‘you’ living ‘your’ life.
I was convinced I had read all of the “PS:” and tooltips but I completely missed the last part and the link. Thank you, I haven’t seen the linked webpage before. I’ll read it but by the title it seems to be the context I was missing. Also, I haven’t bought Richard’s journal, so I have never read it. Maybe there’s more information there about this topic.
Hehe I was actually going to reply to you and recommend doing exactly this! It does describe his transition from Enlightenment then through the many months of intense agitation following the disintegration of the psyche and then all the way through to a full actual freedom, also it’s just an incredible read all around.
